07.10.00 – 13.10.00

I know it, you know it, we all know it. EFNet is going
down the tube, worse than usual this time. The main servers are
getting hammered by script kiddies, splits are happening more and more,
and the number of server delinking is out of hand. Because of this,
a lot of talk has been going around about moving channels to another
server. Apparently that didn’t last too long, but why? There are
two sides to this that I want to rant on, 1) Forcing people to goto
the new server and 2) The one’s who refused to move just because it
wasn’t EFNet.

Now, moving server is probably a pretty good idea, but the
execution in how it was being done was poorly done. A move to
openprojects.net was tried and apparently failed. Why did it fail?
Maybe do to the fact that it was never discusses with some of the
main people in the LS community. Maybe it was do to the fact that
to a lot of people, the move felt very forced. Nothing was ever
discusses really, it was just an up and move and then “Come to this
server now because.” That was really the WRONG way to do it. No
matter who you think you are, you cannot force people to move just
because you think its a good idea.

On the other side of this are the one’s who flat out refused
to move, because… Because it wasn’t EFNet, or because they just
didn’t feel like moving, or because of a list of other really bad
reasons. Nothing to the effect that I stated above, basically just
because. This too is WRONG. If it was decided upon that the chans
should move and these people just refused to move, all that would
do is hold up progress just because they didn’t feel like it.

Personaly, I don’t know which is worse. Forcing a move, or
refusing to move just because. Take some time to think about it.
Think who it will affect. Think of what it will affect, then make
your decisions.

- Desktopian’s New Look ~ quilk (11:21 10.10 na)

Looks like quilk did up a totally new look for desktopian
while tin is working on his tin_toys posting app. I like
the new look personally. Loads faster, looks cleaner, and
is a bit easier to navigate. Take a look.

- Links Warehouse Opens With A Contest ~ SpiritWnd (11:07 13.10 na)

“Links Warehouse is just that, it is a sight that is
primarily designed to house links to either sites or files.
Categories and Subcategories can be added upon request by
the administrators (which is something I will get to shortly).

“If a link is broken, it can be reported as broken and the
next time the user who either originated the link and/or
edited the link will be flagged that the link is broken.

“Now, to maintain this level of sophisticated user handling
requires that every user have a personal user id and pw.
This way not only can the posts be monitored, but when you
post automatically is your information attached to the post.

“Administrators are handy in this site as well. Each category
can have their own administrators. I.E. Shells, Skinz,
Linux, etc.. who have the ability to add subcategories on
demand or add news to that individual area of the site.

“The sites primary design was so that a main SiteOp can walk
away from the site and barely maintain the site while the
active users of the site can keep the information up without
difficulty or programming.

“I ask that you please check it out. There are still features
that I am implementing. As I posted the site at 70% to start
getting the links in. Some of the categories and subcategories
are lame and were initially test only. Yet, I will have the
complete execution of administrative control over the
categories/subcategories in place by Saturday.

“This site is built in ASP and sits on an active database. I
spent a couple of months trying to find what is the best way
to honestly build a resource site and keep it up even in the
absence of a SiteOp. This is the design I came up with.

“To help the Links Warehouse get their links collection
together. Enter in as many links as you can (there are
specific rules, like non-repetition in different categories/
subcategories.) and not being bogus links. Top 3 winners get
faboo prizes….Like:

“1st prize is either (winners choice) a VooDoo-4 AGP Video
Card or a 30GB Maxtor Drive.”

- New IRC Server For LiteStep Channels? (11:13 13.10 ls)

It seems that c0mrade got sick and tired of all the splits
and troubles connecting to efnet and set up all the major
LiteStep channels on a new server. irc.openprojects.net
is home to a lot of the big *nix channels including BSD,
Debain, slashdot, and enlightment to name just a few. Stop
