15.07.00 – 21.07.00
Yet another bad week for me. I have been redoing my scripts
trying in vain to figure out why they are not working. In theory they
should be working without a hitch, but there not. Because of this
the letter never gets uploaded when its supposed to and I have to wait
till Monday to send it out.
Anyway, I have been wanting to go off on a huge rant about
something but am going to hold off until I can take the time to talk
to a few people. What I have been pissed about hasn’t changed and if
you read this weekly, you probably know what I am talking about. Instead
of ranting off like I usually do and getting slammed by everyone for
not doing some investigating first, I am going to do some investigating
first this time then rant. This way I will have all the facts straight
when I run my sword though.

This weeks mailbag question is:
What is the main reason that you use a shell/alt os?

- PixolPod
This is a wallpaper site that also houses the shellmanager
bootman. He has up 153 of his own wallpapers which are
very interesting. Bootman is one of the best shellmanagers
out there as it allows for an unlimited number of shells
to be booted and supports for games and any other exe to be
loaded as the shell.

- CodeX Is Released (10:45 17.07 cx)
“A new shell is out there! It is called CodeX, it’s been around
for a couple months now! It is still in beta but it is very
stable. The first non-beta release is scheduled for September!
“CodeX is a programmable shell that runs in Windows 95/98/NT
and 2000. It uses the Sun’s TCL language as the programming
language. It comes with the following:
- Complete syntax highlighting text editor.
- Complete file manager.
- Visual form builder. (RAD)
- System tray.
- Virtual Window Manager.
- Task manager.
- Themes support.
- OLE support.
- Desktop with shortcut icons.
- Easy and fast popup menu system configured with a single file.
- CPU monitor.
- Zoomer.
- Mini-calculator.
- Clipboard viewer.
- System information.
- Mini cd player.
- Quick run module.
- Console.
- And many many more…
“Everything that you see on screen is fully configurable using
TCL (Tool Command Language). You can also develop your own
modules with Delphi. You can also easily extend the
programming language (TCL) by adding new functions to the
engine.”
*Editors Note* I am adding CodeX to the list of shells I
report on as of September, its official non-beta release.

- State Of Shells (10:35 19.07 na)
Recently, a discussion about the state of shells has taken over
the mailing list and some of the major shell sites. It seems
that because of a really horrible review by a site has sparked
off yet another round of how to improve documentation, themeing,
etc for shells. Two very good rants to read are on tin omen’s
site. Stop on over there and give it a read.

- pcp_volume ~ pcppopper (11:58 19.07 ls)
“This module deals with windows volume controlling system. It
is loosely based on v_bang.dll by blackhawk. However, his module
has more useless (in my opinion =) stuff than mine and is
written in delphi (you should be ashamed =P), whereas mine
is written in ‘ansi’ c (wohoo for purels). I only have 32 megs
of ram so every kb counts, (v_bang.dll = 22.016b,
pcp_vol.dll = 6.144b).

- Mousehide 1.1 ~ Pavel (10:23 21.07 ls)
“This module automatically hides mouse cursor after defined
count of keystrokes or after mouse inactivity, so the cursor
does not cover typed text. After any mouse activity the cursor
is automatically revealed.”
New in this version:
- Added MouseHideStartupDelay
- Added MouseHideStartupSound (to aid setup of correct startup
delay)
- Do hide after key-up event only, ignore key-down. Solves
key+drag bug.
- Do not hide mouse while mouse button is down (timed hide
during mouse drag)
- Added *MouseHideIgnore – experimental

- WIWIKALS Opens To The Tune Of Ranting ~ Craig Eliason (10:50 21.07 ls)
“As you know, jugg recently called the ‘tweeners of the LiteStep
community (between programmers and newbies) to help fill the
documentation void for LiteStep. I am exactly one of those
people, and he has inspired me to put together what I’ve been
considering doing for a while now.
“It is a new site called WIWIKALS. That stands for What I Wish
I’d Known About LiteStep. The idea is to have experienced
LiteSteppers contribute the wisdom they picked up only through
their experience so that more novice users can benefit. The
result might be a bit random, but it should fill some holes in
the documentation gap.”

have all my games added so I do not have to boot into explorer
each time I want to play, easy configuration, crash protection,
neat startup animation, perfect ui and other neat features.”
