30.10.99 – 05.11.99
Last week I seemed to have made a bit of a ripple in the LS
community with my rant on the “flopping about” of LS. This week
I would like to complain about people who say LS is horrible every
time a new shells comes along. With the recent opening of the Ice
sites, this trend is becoming more and more evident. People who
just yesterday were happy as clams with LS, are now saying how
horrible and restrictive it is. BULL!! Just because something new
comes along doesn’t mean you have to down what was fine yesterday. I
can understand wanting to try something new and different, but going
off and saying how horrible LiteStep is just because another shell
is released is just plain wrong. Each shell out there has its good
points and bad points. Most of it is relative to what the person is
looking to do. So to all of you out there that are saying “LiteStep
is nothing now that Ice is coming out.” I say to you that you are
wrong. While I feel that LS does have some maturing to do, I DO NOT
think that because Ice is being released that LiteStep is now nothing,
crappy, worthless, or is going to die.

- Ice preview site open (9:30am 05.11)
Well on the third the Ice dev team finally posted some ss’s
and a run down of IceShell. A fancy flash production
precedes the rest of the site which not only gives an account
of the shell but a release date of the 20th of this month.

MODULES
—————————
- LPopup 1.1 ~ _TAG_ (10:31am 01.11)
- it doesn’t rely any more on modified versions of desktop.dll
and popup.dll; instead it’s now linked to the !LPOPUP bang
command! (by popular request). For this reason a desktop
module able to assign bang commands to mouse clicks is
needed (the only one I know is jdesk)
- it keeps its own windows list, thus being independent from
desktop.dll or from litestep.exe (I’d really like for ls.exe
to keep its own windows list…)
- a list of commands supported by LPopup is included in the
readme
- it supports transparencies!!! (yet your popup needs to have
a fixed width, as every other popup out there)

- ZagAmp ~ Peter Zag (10:44am 01.11)
“OK, this is a small addition to GeekAmp, that I made because
it irritated me (and others) that the geekamp commands
!amp_power and !amp_play starts winamp minimized (and
unmaximizable). So I added two band-commands: !amp_power2 and
!amp_play2. These two starts winamp in the same state as it
was in when you last closed it !!”

Tips
—-
- If you like the idea of split .rc files but don’t want to download
the #include test build, you can simply make a batch file with
the command copy step.rc+popups.rc+hotkey.rc step.rc and add
the batch file to the recycle command like [!execute combine.bat]
[!Recycle] and it will compile all your .rc files into step.rc.

- Wharf Toggle 1.0 ~ Bug*Killer (August 10, 1998)
Wharf Toggle is a small program to make the wharfbar
lose its always ontop feature. From the readme:
“It’s a simple proggy that allows you to have a larger work
area by positioning the Wharfbar behind the other windows.
It’s really useful if, like me, you can’t break the 800×600
limit on your crappy 14″ without destroying your eyes on an
interlaced display and can’t bear Wharfbar auto-hide
feature.”
